Mary, Mary Quite Contrary. How Does Your Garden Grow?

A few weeks or a couple of months back, I can’t remember, my husband and I were having a conversation about the corporate racket, what work would actually have value if no electricity did not exist mixed in with being self sustaining.  During that conversation we also discussed what it would be like to have a small farm but with a modern house.  We have a few chickens, grow a few veggies and fruits and thats about it.  Not into slaughtering my meat myself and we don’t drink milk, well at least my son and I don’t.  The more we spoke, the idea of starting a community garden came up, something my husband would love to do and use it to expose kids who might not otherwise experience fresh veggies and/or fruits on a regula basis.  But first we decided to start in our own backyard.  So with the help of my mother-in-law that is exactly what we did.  We headed to Buchanan’s Plants in the Heights and bought Thai basil, small sweet bell peppers, regular bell peppers, jalapenos, cilantro, tomatoes and strawberries.

Before planting
Love this place!  They had a large selection of herbs, veggies and fruit.  They even had the stevia plant!!  I should have bought that too but I have not time to be drying out any leaves and grinding it and whatever else I need to prepare it.  My time is already short these days.
Any who, we didn’t find any pots until today from our local Home Depot.  It seemed to take only minutes for her to put the garden together.  It took more time unloading the soil and the pots.  And as I’m sitting here writing, I just thought that I should have taken more pics to show the process she took to prep the pots.  She took the plastic crate that we carried the plants home in and cut it up into little squares and put them in the bottom of each pot right over the holes so that the soil would not block the holes completely.
As we were planting them and she was explaining to me about the root systems and how and when I need to cut them if their too dense once you remove them from the little pot otherwise it will stifle the growth, I snuck a pick of my strawberries.  They are already beginning to grow!  Too excited!
Mini Strawberries
After they were was planted, here is the finished result.
Garden After
Isn’t it pretty!?  Oh and I forgot to mention, I found some seeds for some microgreens so we planted that as well. Annnnn since Buchanan’s Plants happen to be out of green onion at the time, we simply planted the roots of some I bought earlier today when I went grocery shopping.  So yeah, this chic over is really loving this healthy lifestyle I have adapted and that is continually evolving.  But what’s even more cool, is that this morning when I ran out of cilantro because ours had gone bad, what did my MIL, go straight to our little cilantro plant and cut a few leaves.  Ha!  Isn’t that awesome!?
You should definitely give it a whirl and tell me your results.  I’ll keep you posted on mine and we can grow together.

All Star Weekend 2013 and Date Night!

The last few days have been a whirlwind of activities and events.  Well the last week actually.  First, I auditioned to become a group fitness instructor to teach boot camp at my gym, 24 Hour Fitness.  I was a little nervous, but I went in just ready to have fun and show ‘em what I’m working it. Drumroll please….. I got the job!!!  I can now bring the pain at 3 locations near you.  Well at least if you’re in the Houston area.  So I’m uber excited and can’t wait to start!!!  Then I had a second audition on Thursday for another gym for the same thing and that one went well also. Now I’m just waiting to set up my formal interview.  Wish me luck!!

So moving on to Friday, I met up a with a good friend, who has recently decided to change her lifestyle to one more health and fitness based and she wanted to tips on what to eat so we took a trip to our local H-E-B.  I unfortunately did not think to take pics, but she did record video and I will post as soon as she finishes editing it.

Now to when the weekend  began to get wild!  It was All Star Weekend here in the H and there were plenty of festivities and activities to partake in and we were fortunate enough to get tickets to get in to some of the hottest parties due to a close friend of ours who works for one of the companies sponsoring some of the events.  So the homies and I got a little dressed up and headed to a private event at Scott Gertner’s Sky Bar.

There was plenty of alcohol and food to be had all for FREE I might add.  I admit indulged in a couple of drinks.  I’m not much of a drinker since Christmas of 2005.  Yeeeeaaaaahh, that was a bad night.  Any, who we sipped and ate, peeped a few celebrities (who knew Tony Parker was so short and looks like I could squat him? So. Serious.)  We chatted and danced while being “entertained” by the lyrical sounds of Daddy Yankee.  I didn’t know he was still making music.  Afterwards we all met up at the Breakfast Klub and joined another couple who didn’t manage to make it to the festivities.

Sorry about the quality, the hubby took these with his phone.

And here are a few more pics of the night and pure shenanigans.

This is my friend protecting her Louis Vuitton bag while walking to the venue. It was raining a little.  We had a good laugh but I can’t knock her though.  I would probably do the same thing!  Check her on her youtube channel @libra1375.  She goes talks about properly protecting your Louis bags, makeup tips, fashion, etc.

Shots from friday

After enjoying a good meal with good friends, we headed home to pass out and get started with the new day in just a few hours.  Yes it was that kind of night.  One we don’t get often, but well worth it in the end.

The next day, well really later that day, we just kind of hung out with our little guy before heading out to do a little shopping.  Traffic was a nightmare due to everyone heading to the Galleria or somewhere in the vacinity!! But we survived.

Back at home we got ready to head out for the real festivities, a party at the House of Blues and a party at Rich’s hosted by none other than the Jigga Man himself.  Now let me just say, we don’t get to go out often so I wanted something really cute to wear.  I bought 3 dresses and ended up wearing none of them!  Instead I settled for a little number I had wore nearly TWELVE years ago to a college function.  And wouldn’t you know I had a smidge more room in it now?  This after having 1 child AND being 5-10 pounds heavier than I was then.  Just goes to show what leading a healthy lifestyle will get you!

Then and Now Dress Pic

We ended up skipping the House of Blues party and headed straight for Rich’s.  Yeaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh, upon arrival, it was a hot mess! The club owners had not organized very well and were sending people all over even if they had VIP status (which we did).  Cops were being rude to the reps of of the beverage company sponsoring the event.  Girls who were extra “thirsty” trying to bum rush the door. People being picked up and thrown out the club. Not literally but being put out none the least. Just pure ratchetness!!  Soooooo….after 1.5 hours of the tomfoolery, we finally made it in.

So we get in and we make it upstairs to what I call semi VIP.  There was yet another velvet rope that we would have to get passed in order to mix and mingle with people you only see on TV.  It was cool.  Just really crowded and smoky.  So after about another hour or so I was ready to go.  Until, we saw the hubby of our friend.  He managed to hook us up and get us into the true VIP.  Now mind you, security was thick so there weren’t too many pictures to be had.  Okay none, but whose counting?  On the way in, I passed Ne-Yo and Jay-z and his wife, H-town’s own Beyonce. As went stepped up on the raised seating area, Ludacris makes an appearance as well as LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and some other people, whose faces I recognized but didn’t quite know their names.  As I am standing around people watching, it was cool to see how ordinary these celebrities were wiiiiittttthhhh the exception of all the money they make and being known by everyone in the free world.  They acted no different than people I would see out any other time.

We partied until the club closed at 4.  Yes another late, VERY late night but it turned out to be a good time.  For an All Star weekend that started out with no plans in sight nor any desire to really make any to “hanging” with some of your fav celebrities, was alright by me!

But the weekend was not over yet.  The hubby had planned a date night that had been delayed to our little guy having a very high fever a few weeks ago.

My date night dress

He made reservations at one of fav restaurants, Uchi.  The food is So. Good!  But this was no ordinary date night.  This time we had an agenda.  We wanted to discuss our future plans, goals and dreams.  We are both finding our passions and now trying to fully pursue them.  The only problem, my husband has a full time job which he loathes and slowly drains a little bit of life from him everyday.  And I hate seeing him come home looking so defeated each and everyday. So yeah, this was a discussion that needed to be had ASAP.

Now I’ve mentioned Uchi before when we visited Austin for my birthday this past December but they also have one here in Houston.  And just like any other time, it was just as good.  We decided on the Chef’s plate and enjoyed whatever they brought us. So I’m not going to bore you with too many details but I will say that I had the absolute best dessert ever!!  It was this lemon gelato with ground pistachios, white balsamic and one or two other ingredients that they made by hand because their machine had broken.  But when I tell you the flavor of this made me want to go around slapping people it was so good!!

So here is a quick pic summary of some our tasty treats.

Uchi food and couple pic

We had a great talk and of course great meal.  What a wonderful end to a busy yet fun filled weekend.

Later peeps!

What 200 Calories Looks Like

While surfing the web just now, I saw this article on msn.com listed 29 different foods, all 200 calories and what they looked like in comparison to each other.  I’m just going to say, think twice before eating that Snickers bar, when hunger hits.

Check it out and tell me your thoughts.

Home of the Future

Houston doesn’t have a lot of repurposed homes, at least none that I know of.  I’ve told my husband on more than one occasion that my dream home would either a modern home with lots of windows for natural light built from the ground up or renovating a building that had a former use such as a bank, manufacture or in this couple’s case, even a library.  Just something to that effect.  I like homes with character, and not something built to fit in a master planned community.  Blech!! Not my cup of tea!!  Its one of the things I miss most about Atlanta.  If you lived within the city, which we did, there were plenty of neighborhoods that had their own vibe.  And what made it better was that we could walk to these neighborhoods or take a short drive and the feel and scene would change but in a good way.  Even though we don’t live there anymore, I still keep up with the news from time to time and check out their section called Private Quarters.  It gives an inside look into the homes of one of the city’s inhabitants which often includes some type of renovation.  I almost always check this out and I think you should too.  I may not be able to afford this now, but I can at least dream and have a goal to aspire to. Take a peek at their latest installment.

Give Thanks…..

Its been a few days but there have been a few things going on with me.  But instead of writing about them, I’ve decided to do a little video.  I often times dread writing because what I say in my head or the 1 sided “conversations” I have when I’m thinking out loud never quite translate on paper.  And after seeing a friend’s hidden youtube channel (I say hidden because none of us girlfriends knew about it), I was like hey, this seems simple enough and it solves a problem for me.   Please don’t be brutal because I hope and plan to make more.  But you’ll hear all about that too.  Here goes nothing!
